current portion of long-term debt

CPLTD. A value on a company's balance sheet which indicates how much long-term debt must be repaid within the upcoming fiscal year. This includes any debt which has its final payment due in the upcoming year; any other debt is simply recorded in the long-term debt field. This value can be important because if the current portion is very high, a concern would be that the company might not have enough cash on hand to cover that debt.

Technical analysts try to buy at one of the bottoms in anticipation of a rise (which would make the shape of a "W" on the chart). opposite of double top.

Dividend Reinvestment Plan

DRIP. An investment plan offered by some corporations enabling shareholders to automatically reinvest cash dividends and capital gains distributions, thereby accumulating more stock without paying brokerage commissions. Many DRIPs also allow the investment of additional cash from the shareholder, known as an optional cash purchase. Unlike with a Direct Stock Purchase Plan, with a DRIP the investor must purchase the first share in the company through a brokerage. After that, the company will take whatever dividends it would normally send as a check and instead it will reinvest them to purchase more shares in the company for you, all without charging a commission. The only drawback is that the investor has no control over when his/her money from the dividends is used to purchase new stock in the company, which means he/she might be buying new shares at sub-optimal times. also called Dividend Reinvestment Program

variable life

Life insurance for which the amount of the payments is determined by the performance of the underlying investments chosen by the policyholder. Agents selling such policies must be Registered Representatives of a broker/dealer licensed by the NASD and registered with the SEC. Choices range from low-risk fixed income funds to high-yield stock and bond funds. These accounts are typically accompanied by higher fees. Returns are generally not guaranteed and investment risk is assumed by the policy holder instead of the insurance company. Premiums remain fixed under this arrangement. As would be expected, the better the investments perform, the larger the death benefit will be. However, the death benefit will not drop below a certain minimum, regardless of investment performance.

indifference curve

A curve used in economics which shows how consumers would react to different combinations of products. On the graph, a quantity of one product appears on the x axis and a quantity of another product appears on the y axis. Consumers would be equally satisfied at any point along a given curve, as each point brings the same level of utility to that consumer. The slope of the curve is referred to as the marginal rate of substitution.

If a company has a change in earnings derived from a decrease in production costs or an increase in sales, they are said to have a high quality of earnings. If a company's earnings are attributed to outside sources such as inflation, this is seen as low quality of earnings.

market conversion price

This is equal to the price on the convertible divided by the conversion ratio (the number of shares that the convertible can be converted into). also called conversion parity price.

annual meeting

The company gathering, usually held at the end of each fiscal year, at which the previous year and the outlook for the future are discussed and directors are elected by common shareholders. Shortly before each annual meeting, the corporation sends out a document called a proxy statement to each shareholder. The proxy statement contains a list of the business concerns to be addressed at the meeting and a ballot for voting on company initiatives and electing the new Board. This proxy ballot authorizes someone else at the meeting (usually the management team) to vote on investors' behalf.

I am very proud of what Vertex has accomplished, and we now stand on the cusp of great clinical and medical success. This year won't soon be forgotten in biotech circles. Gut-wrenching disaster, Nothing is ever perfect, of course. But looking ahead, 2010 holds plenty of promise. Some biotech companies were putting their toes into the public market waters to see whether they should dive in with an IPO. It's a well-worn cliché that men dominate the top ranks of the biotech industry. Watch out: Eisai has challenged Pfizer to a tug-of-war over the Alzheimer's remedy Aricept. Eisai tells Pfizer to kiss Aricept goodbye.

Senator Joseph I. Lieberman, the 2000 Democratic vice presidential candidate who straddled the political divide between Democrats and Republicans.

commodity

1. A physical substance, such as food, grains, and metals, which is interchangeable with another product of the same type, and which investors buy or sell, usually through futures contracts. The price of the commodity is subject to supply and demand. Risk is actually the reason exchange trading of the basic agricultural products began. For example, a farmer risks the cost of producing a product ready for market at sometime in the future because he doesn't know what the selling price will be.

quote size

The number of shares that are being offered for purchase at the bid price, often expressed in terms of hundreds of shares. Some traders try to use the bid size and ask size to measure impending short term upward or downward pressure on the stock's price. This can work for stocks on exchanges such as NYSE and AMEX, but is far less useful on Nasdaq, which has market makers ready to buy and sell shares, rather than specialists who balance books of buy and sell orders. also called bid size.

Warren Buffett
